The Capitol Renegade United Racing Club made the trip to Georgetown Speedway in Georgetown, DE on Friday September 21st to compete in the ‘September Showdown’. The 18 car field honored Greg Hodnett by sporting “Hodnett” on their top wings.
Modified stand out, Ryan Watt, made his URC debut in the Tim Hogue owned number 39. Justin Barger made the trip from Montrose, NY to test his luck at the Georgetown Speedway for the first time.
The packed grandstands were entertained with 2 heats which were won by Curt Michael and Adam Carberry.
The redraw for the feature put Justin Barger and JJ Grasso on the front row. Adam Carberry and Ryan Watt in the second row. The point’s leader, Josh Weller, started 5th and 2nd place, by just one point, Curt Michael, started 6th. When the green lap flew it appeared that the race was on with Michael and Weller chasing race leader Barger and keeping an eye on each other.
Lap 6 showed Weller passing Michael to move into 3rd and setting his sights on leader Justin Barger. Just one lap later, Curt Michael had a flat tire and it appeared that Weller’s points lead would grow tremendously. However, Michael’s crew had other plans. They quickly changed the tire and got Michael out to continue his fight for championship number 11. He would have his work cut out for him by starting at the back of the pack.
Lap 9 had Bill Unglert catching an inside tire and collapsing his front end. Curt Michael ended up facing the wrong way on the front stretch and had to restart at the tail end of the field. Weller used that double file restart to get by leader, Barger and never looked back.
Deep in the pack Chris Allen was working his way thru traffic to race from 18th to finish 9th. That earned him the hard charger award. The hard charger award netted Allen a total of $300, $50 from URC’s weekly hard charger sponsor Frank’s Fine Swine and $250 from AD-ART signs of Georgetown, DE. who added to the hard charger award for the ‘September Showdown’.
The 27 lap feature event in tribute to Greg Hodnett showed Josh Weller coming home with the win. Justin Barger made the long drive worth it by finishing 2nd. JJ Grasso got the checkers in 3rd while Adam Carberry finished 4th. Ryan Watt proved he is a strong competitor in sprint cars by finishing his URC debut in 5th . Eddie Strada finished strong in 6th. Curt Michael fought his way to 7th. New daddy, Troy Betts brought his no 22 home in 8th. Chris Allen and Steve Downs, who made it back out to the track after sittting out for a while rounded out the top 10.
