On Saturday, December 1st, the United Racing Club held their annual awards banquet. It was a rainy evening, which mimicked the weather of the entire season. There was a full house of drivers, crews, owners, sponsors, and families and friends. Emcee Allison Reinert kicked off the evening by welcoming everyone in attendance and talked about the foundation of racing - calling it the “fuel that flows through our veins”.
President Rick Weller addressed the crowd - emphasizing the importance of volunteerism within the club. He encouraged everyone in attendance to get involved in some way, especially putting out positive words on social media. Of great importance to the club, will be locating track officials, a race director, and a treasurer for the upcoming season.
He welcomed Bill Unglert and Bill Gallagher as the newest members of the board, and thanked Mark Sasso for agreeing to return for another term. He announced that he would remain President for another term and Curt Michael would remain the Vice-President. Leaving as Treasurer is Tom Whittall.
Mr. Weller rounded out his speech by reminding everyone that URC is a family based, grassroots racing organization, which race fans continue to crave. He told the crowd, “Our club has always been a bunch of racers who race because they love it, not because they can afford to live it.” He also made special mention of the comradery shown by Curt Michael, Bill Gallagher, and crew, as they supported Josh Weller in his championship moment at Bridgeport Speedway this past November.
Aubrey Weller and Madison Michael acted as trophy presenters for the evening, helping Allie honor the top 13 drivers. Accepting awards and point fund monies were Ryan Stillwaggon, Adam Carberry, Bill Unglert, Chris Allen, Mark Sasso, Robbie Stillwaggon, Jason Cherry, Troy Betts, Eddie Strada, Chad Layton, Ryan Quackenbush, Curt Michael, and Josh Weller. Jason Cherry received special mention for his first top ten points finish. Ryan Quackenbush collected both 3rd place in points and the honor of Rookie of the Year. Curt Michael was recognized during his award as being a long-standing supporter of the club and its mission.
The Club also presented special recognition awards. The Sportsmanship Award was given to Mark Sasso, who is always good for a friendly smile in the pits. Woman of the Year was presented to Tammie Chambers - an official who was recognized for her hard work at the track. All of the URC officials - Matt, Mike, Tammy, Bob, and Flo were given a special thank you for their long hours and dedication to the club.
Josh Weller and team celebrated their first ever championship, collecting the Perpetual Champion’s Cup. Josh gave brief remarks stating, “I would like to thank every single person who is sitting in my corner - without you, I would not be standing here.” The team and club continued celebrating, as mechanic, Cory Gamboa, was honored as Mechanic of the Year, giving a touching speech and making a heart-warming marriage proposal.
The club would like to thank Chad Warner Photography for capturing our evening.
The race teams now head into the “off-season” with many planning to attend the upcoming PRI show this week. Look for several drivers to be in attendance at the United Racing Club booth at the Motorsports show in January, as well.
